Haha, I think I had to give Contact 3-4 tries before I really got into it.
Thank you for the comparison! Merwin Peake is a fantastically frightening artist. I'll see if I can make some horrifying drawings as well.

Hi Jacob,

I just read the article you wrote on Contact (via Tiny Cartridge) and would like to say that it's fantastic!

Contract was a game I followed prior to its release, and picked up day one; it all seemed very exciting to me. Until I played it.

Although innovative and beautiful to look at, the gameplay did not grab me enough to finish it. Your article on the other hand has inspired me to give it another go.

Also, browsing your sketch work on this site makes me think of Mervyn Peake's art - something that I find very fascinating. I really like your work

Best,

Pete

Hello Jacob,

Thanks for the review! It never fails to make my day when I hear that people enjoyed our game. I thought SMG was amazing too so I feel extremely flattered that you think Soul Bubbles plays in that league. Thanks a lot.

Thanks a lot. I'm been getting some good feedback on it, around places. I think that if it isn't too pretentious to say, then, what works, is that despite the bad art, the message, feeling and story are still coming across quite clearly. I hope a lot will agree.

Well I read a few books to get a good idea of what is important in a storyboard. The animation classic "The Illusion of Life" describes that storyboards should be about what's going on and the mood of the situation. It shouldn't be a diagram for the dialogue. And from looking at the storyboards of Ratatouille and Kungfu Panda, I can see that the artwork isn't whats important either.

So make a simple story, that's told through what's happening on the screen, camera angles and lighting. Show a lot of varied angles for a good reason.

I think you should make it easy for yourself. I only use white and two shades of gray. While Miyazaki makes a full watercolor images for his storyboards, I think that would only complicate things for me. You know, less is more.
